The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a major awards ceremony nears, one notices a demand for introducing of new categories to recognize unsung work and satisfy the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything during that awards season
  • Another creative title missed out in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
