Peace Deal Offers Relief to the Palestinian territory, But Concerns Persist Over Future

On the early hours of Thursday, there was minimal celebration across the Gaza Strip. Reports of the pending peace agreement had traveled swiftly throughout the war-torn region throughout the evening, accompanied by sporadic gunfire fired into the sky in celebration, yet with the arrival of dawn the atmosphere turned to tense anticipation.

“Everyone is still afraid,” stated a young woman in her twenties in al-Mawasi, the squalid, overcrowded coastal strip where numerous families have taken refuge under temporary shelters and plastic shacks.

“We anticipate a formal declaration and real guarantees regarding access points, bringing in food, and halting the violence, devastation and population transfers.”

Nearby, Abbas Hassouna, 64 explained that his household were “waiting for an official announcement and real guarantees for opening the crossings, facilitating nourishment delivery, and stopping the killing, destruction and eviction”.

“Once these developments occur, only then will we truly believe them. Yet at this moment, anxiety continues. Authorities may withdraw suddenly or break the agreement as before and we will remain amid the continuous pattern without any improvement except more suffering,” said Hassouna, who is from northern Gaza though he has faced expulsion several times.

Mixed Emotions Throughout Locals

A 47-year-old woman called Ola al-Nazli explained she heard regarding the peace deal via local residents within the al-Mawasi district. “I did not know regarding my reaction, about feeling joyful or mournful. We have experienced this many times before, and every instance we faced disillusionment anew, therefore now anxiety and prudence have intensified,” said Nazli, who was compelled to evacuate her home in Gaza City because of the recent armed conflict there.

“People reside in tents which offer little protection from the cold or amid explosions. Those who had money or work suffered complete loss. This explains why any joy we feel is combined with pain and fear. I only hope that we might exist protected, away from detonations, not be forced to move, and that border passages will reopen shortly,” Nazli added.

Aid Arrangements Ongoing

Humanitarian organizations stated they were organizing to saturate the territory with nourishment and vital provisions. The comprehensive proposal ensures a boost to humanitarian assistance. The World Health Organization chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said his agency was equipped to “scale up its work to respond to urgent healthcare demands of patients across Gaza, and to support rehabilitation of the devastated medical infrastructure”.

The United Nations organization dedicated to refugee assistance, welcomed the deal as a “huge relief”, and stated it had enough food stockpiled beyond the territory to provide for the devastated territory’s 2.3m population over the next quarter. While increased support has entered the territory during previous days, supplies continue to be severely inadequate, relief staff reported.

Relief and Concern Within Relocated Individuals

Jihad al-Hilu received information of the ceasefire on a radio as he sat in his shelter within al-Mawasi. “During that time, I sensed a blend of joy and relief, like a glimmer of optimism had returned to my heart subsequent to prolonged anticipation. We desperately wanted this point in time, for killings to end and for the slaughter that have destroyed numerous families to conclude,” Hilu, 33 explained.

“At the same time, prevails substantial anxiety residing inside us. We worry that this peace arrangement might be temporary and that the war could return similar to previous occasions.”

There are also general worries regarding what tranquility might mean for the region, where the vast majority of residences have been damaged or destroyed, almost all infrastructure devastated and where numerous residents goes hungry every day. Approximately 67,000 individuals overwhelmingly ordinary citizens have lost their lives amid armed conflict commenced after the militant attack during late 2023, that resulted in 1,200 deaths also mostly civilians with 251 individuals captured by militants.

“My primary concern beyond other issues is the absence of safety. Hunger can be endured, but the absence of safety is the real disaster. I fear that Gaza could turn into an area of disorder controlled by criminal groups and paramilitary organizations in place of legal systems.”

Ongoing Developments

Local sources indicated Israeli forces discharged artillery to deter residents returning to northern parts of the territory early Thursday yet mentioned lack of battle sounds or aerial bombardments.

A resident named Nadra Hamadeh, whose sister, her relative, two family members and another relative lost their lives in hostilities, expressed her desire to travel back from the coastal area to the northern territory as soon as possible to assess her property, which she believes has suffered harm though not completely ruined.

“There is deep sorrow for individuals who surrendered their relatives and offspring and properties … As for us, we anticipate going back to our residence which we had to evacuate. The sensation persists like our spirits had been separated from our physical forms during our departure,” the 57-year-old Hamadeh expressed.

“We desire that conflict concludes,
