2026 Dubbed the Age of the Croaking Craze.

My key observation from the recent developer-focused presentation was highly engaging, my primary conclusion was a personal epiphany: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these amphibious creatures. Considering a collection of frogs is known as an army, it feels they are taking over the industry.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Amphibians have been not at all new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a niche presence. Yet, their popularity has seemingly increased in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an overwhelming flood of results. Although, some of these are novelty titles, a great many are bona fide titles centered on frogs.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To understand this trend, I undertook a detailed review into the past five years of hoppy gaming on Steam. My criteria was admittedly subjective, counting games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The data tell a compelling story: a marked rise from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The amphibian's rising status in the broader culture is also visible elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. Yet, the explosion in gaming appears uniquely pronounced.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

Honestly, this is a movement I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs offer inherent design advantages for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as endearing characters that often become a fan favorite in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their stretchy limbs and grappling abilities enable a wide array of unique mechanics.

Many of the featured titles clearly utilize these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has even begun—and the possibility for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the largest year for amphibian gaming.

Should these games perform well—and historically, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we might just be entering a true croaking cultural moment.
